I was never a slot player, and do not follow it much. But apparently the popularity of the recently introduced "Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBT)" such as the Roulette machines in use in the UK have caused a significant increase in calls to the GAMCARE hotline this year. This according to an article in the Guardian online. Both the number of calls to the hotline, and the average amount lost have increased. The new games seem to be most popular with the 18-35 set.
Of course there is no evidence that the machines themselves are to blame, or just the general trend of increased gambling overall to account for the numbers, but the British Government is "monitoring" the situation.
